Joe DeLapp

Board Advisor

Joe injects a 35-year career leading both large, global companies with smaller, more entrepreneurial companies largely in medical device, consumer products, and equipment industries. Over 27 years at three consecutive companies, ABB/Briot, Ciba Vision, and J&J, Joe led high-performance teams that generated all-time high sales, profits, and market shares.

As a CEO spanning 18 years at two companies, Joe led a remarkable and complete turnaround in the medical equipment space, where earnings improved from -55% to +10% to net sales within three years and share grew from #4 in market share to #1. The team built by Joe generated the first U.S. profit 10 years after their founding. Joe spent eight years in his second CEO role at the startup, Visioneering Technologies, Inc. (VTI), which specialized in disruptive technology in optometry in one underserved presbyopia category and in the emerging myopia progression category. Joe, at the height of the country’s financial crash in November 2008, helped to secure $12M in institutional and angel funding. VTI was later recognized for the GA BIO “Deal of the Year” in 2009.

Prior to his roles as a CEO, Joe spent five years at Novartis with #2 contact lens seller, Ciba Vision, as the U.S. VP of Marketing and Sales with additional responsibilities including Customer Service and Package Engineering (more than 300 people and $300M in sales). Joe used a combination of consumer and professional initiatives that lead the company to: a) #1 market share position as well as b) an all-time high sales and profitability, and c) the prestigious Irv Bennet Award given once every five years for the best practice management program. Prior to that, Joe spent 12 years at Johnson & Johnson leaving as the Director of Marketing. He also spent two years at Proctor & Gamble.

A graduate of Hillsdale College with a BA in English and Business, Joe also received an MBA in Marketing and Finance from Indiana University. He is on the Board at the Rising Phoenix Perfumery, the National Fundraising Board for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and the P&G Alumni Association here in Atlanta. Joe has been married for more than 40 years and has three grown children.
